Ipswich Allotment Society (IAS) is a volunteer-run, independent society for allotment plot-holders in Ipswich. We work with field secretaries and Ipswich Borough Council (IBC) to help members get the most from their plots, share information between sites, and promote allotment gardening in the town.

About Ipswich allotments

Allotments give you the chance to grow your own fruit and vegetables, support pollinators and wildlife, and enjoy the outdoors with friends, family, and neighbours. They are rewarding for people of all ages and abilities.
If you are interested in renting an allotment in Ipswich, please note that plots are owned and managed directly by Ipswich Borough Council (IBC), not by IAS. Applications, waiting lists, and day-to-day letting are handled by the council.

There are 18 allotment fields in Ipswich, together providing close to 1,000 plots. The size of a field varies widely, from small sites with around 10 plots to larger ones with more than 120.

📍 You can find more information, including a map showing the location of all allotment fields, on Ipswich Borough Council’s information page.

Once you have a plot, IAS is here to support you as a member and to represent your interests.

What IAS does for members

IAS is the independent society that represents and supports allotment holders in Ipswich. We:

  • Represent plot-holders and keep links across all fields.
  • Support field secretaries and site coordination.
  • Share practical advice, seasonal updates and a newsletter.
  • Organise occasional events and community initiatives.
  • Provide access to member services (e.g. sheds or shared facilities where available) and guidance on good practice.

For a small annual subscription, you can join IAS as a main member if you hold a plot. Family, friends, and other supporters can also join as Associate or Garden members.

Membership includes public liability insurance while on allotment sites, as well as access to our newsletter, events, and initiatives.

Please remember: for plot availability, waiting lists, or site facilities, you should contact Ipswich Borough Council through their allotments page, as letting and day-to-day management is handled by IBC.

Governance

IAS is run by elected officers and field secretaries who represent plot-holders across Ipswich. You can meet the IAS team on our dedicated page.
